Free crochet pattern: Eyes
Many moons ago I made some crochet eyes with the intention of adding them to a wall-hanging, but as it goes with a lot of design ideas it didn’t really work out. I was left with these kind of cool looking crochet eyes though (I love the trend for eyes in design at the moment!) and didn’t really want them going to waste.
I asked over on my Instagram whether people would be interested in the pattern and I got a lot of yeses - so here it is for you!
Pattern:
Written in US crochet terms.
Abbreviations:
Ch = chain
Dc = double crochet
Sc = single crochet
Sl st = slip stitch
Picot = chain 3 then join to form picot stitch
Start with a magic ring or ch4 and join to form a circle.
Step 1 - Ch3 (counts as dc) then 17dc in the ring. Join to top of ch3 to close. (18dc)
Step 2 - Ch18, skip 8 dc, sl st in bottom of the circle, ch 18, skip 8 dc, sl st to join in beginning of the round to finish.
Step 3 - Ch1, sc in same st and in next 2 - making sure to crochet around the chains and into the ‘iris’ (see picture below).
Step 4 - {ch5, sl st in second ch from the hook and all remaining to form ‘eyelash’, 3sc} two times, picot.
Step 5 - {3sc, 4ch, sl st in second ch from hook and each remaining to form ‘eyelash’} two times.
Step 6 - 6sc *making sure to crochet into the bottom of the ‘iris’ (see pictures).
Step 7 - {4ch, sl st in second ch from hook and each remaining to form ‘eyelash’, 3sc} two times, picot.
Step 8 - {3sc, ch5, sl st in second ch from hook and each remaining to form ‘eyelash’} two times, 3sc *making sure to crochet into the ‘iris’ as before, sl st join to finish.
Once I’ve finished the crocheting and weaved in the ends, I usually block the ‘eye’ using some fabric stiffener so that it keeps its shape. You can also use a mixture of PVA glue and hot water if you don’t have any fabric stiffener.
And that’s it - simple really. I hope that makes sense (all feedback welcome!) - and please let me know if you give this pattern a go. I’d love to see some eyes added to your next crochet project. Also, as always, feel free to tag me on Instagram with any of your logii inspired makes.
