Crochet tutorial: changing colour in DC (UK) / SC (US)

Quite a few of my patterns require you to change colour; either using tapestry, intarsia or fair-isle techniques. So I thought it was probably a good idea that I give you a little tutorial on how that’s done, in case you’ve never done it before (or have, but would like a little reminder).

If you’d like to know the difference between the different colour changing techniques, stay tuned for another blog post coming soon!

Okay, so first I should mention that the terms I’m using in this post are all UK crochet terms but I’ve included the US terms in the brackets to help make it clear.

I’m starting with double crochet (US single crochet) as all of my wall hanging patterns use this stitch, but I’ll be showing you how to change colour in the other stitches in future blog posts.

With each different type of crochet stitch you want to start thinking about changing yarn colours one stitch before the actual colour change. This is because the loop that remains on your hook when you’ve completed a stich becomes part of the next stich along, so you want to make sure the loop is in the colour you are changing to. Have a look at the photos below to see what I mean.

double crochet (US single)

  1. Begin at the stitch before the colour change.

  2. Insert your hook into the stitch.

  3. Yarn over.

  4. Pull up a loop.

  5. Switch the working yarn over to the other colour.

  6. Yarn over.

  7. Pull up a loop.

  8. Complete your stitch.

Et voila! You’ve just completed a colour change in double crochet (US single crochet) - well done. The main thing to remember is that the colour change starts in the stitch beforehand, but once you get the hang of it, you will naturally remember to do this.

I hope you have found this useful! If you want to save this tutorial for later, pin the graphic below:

I’ll be publishing more helpful tutorials soon, but in the meantime why not try your new colour changing skills with one of my many patterns here.

Thanks and take care,

Lois x
