My 2020 Vision Board

Have you ever created a vision board? I hadn’t until this year. It’s not something I had thought about or really saw the value in before now, but at the start of the year I had three different sources (completely unrelated) telling me to create a vision board for 2020. So I saw it as a sign and made one.

The first step was to sit for 5 minutes or so and think about how I’d like my year to pan out. How do I want it to look? What goals do I want to achieve? What do I want to spend more time doing? What do I want more of/less of? Where do I want to go? What do I want to learn?

There are lots of questions you could ask yourself. These were just a few of mine.

I decided that this year, as well as stepping out of my comfort zone a bit more, I want to keep on showing up online. I also want to spend more quality time with my kids and be in the moment with them more. I want to spend more time down the allotment. I want to take trips out at weekends and explore the Peak District (my neighbourhood). I’d like to work on creative projects just for the fun of it. I want to move my body and generally feel better within it. I want to eat healthier meals and take the time to prepare them in advance. I want to take better care of myself, so I can in turn take better care of my family.

This all seems like a lot, but they’re mostly all things I can tweak as part of my everyday routines and all totally achievable - the next trick is to make a plan so I can work these intentions into my life. Hmm, another blog post maybe?

Once I had all this in my head and down on paper I hopped over to my Pinterest page and created a private board called (funnily enough) ‘vision board’.

I then spent some time searching for images that conveyed the goals I’d set out for this year, or how I’d like my life to look and feel. That was the fun part for me as I’m a very visual person.

After I had around 20 images, or at least one to represent each of my wishes, I went through and decided on the best or most important ones to me and downloaded them onto my phone. I then used Canva to create a moodboard - they have loads of free templates, but I just created my own from a blank document.

As I kept adding images, sometimes I’d remove ones that didn’t fit or weren’t working and would then re-prioritise each image as I went along. This is what I ended up with:

I’ve now printed it out (twice) and hung it up in places I know I’ll look at it often. I’ve also saved it as my phone wallpaper.

Would you like to have a go? Here are the steps I took:

  • Sit for a few minutes and think about how you want this next year to look like for you.

  • Write it all down.

  • Gather images that represent (to you) your goals and wishes. Pinterest is a great tool for this.

  • Display your chosen images in one place, all together. Either print them out, cut them from magazines, or create a digital mood board in Canva (for example).

  • Display your mood board somewhere you’ll look at it often. Above your desk, inside your wardrobe door, or as your phone wallpaper.

I’m surprised I’d never done this before. I’m loving having this visual reminder of my goals and wishes and I’m already looking forward to reflecting back in a year’s time to see whether it made a difference.
